Jonathan "Fatal1ty" Wendel, perhaps the world's best known professional gamer, has signed on as a play-by-play commentator for DirecTV's new league, the Championship Gaming Series. Wendel talked with TwitchGuru at CES 2007 about DirecTV, pro gaming's evolution and what he's looking forward to this year.

I think it would be good to see gaming become a popular sport like baseball or basketball.  If it goes mainstream then a lot of the misunderstandings about it will begin to fade away.

Hehe. . .  Obviously not.  Besides, most of the best gamers are athletic as well. (Martial Arts, Weights, Running, Sports)  Being fit does aid your mental fitness and makes your response time quicker.  Unless your a South Park WoW player!  

The only thing that bothers me a lot is that he's supporting multiplatform stuff.  The primary source of gaming's current downfall is mostly located around the games moving from PC to Xbox/Xbox 360.  Consoles are good at what they do.  PC is good at what it does.  Why make compromises when you can have it all?
 
On the other hand, it does provide some Grade A entertainment along the way, and I'm not actually forced to play the crap even if I am deprived of a bit of gold along the way.

I'm still waiting for gamings "Bad Boy"  You know a Barry Bonds of sorts who wins all this dough and pops a piss test.  Wait, it was my CAL teamate's....  

 
Opfreak, you're certainly entitled to your opinion. But I have to ask: have you ever seen a professional competition? I have a feeling that the answer is no, and if that's correct, I encourage you to check one out. It may change your opinion on pro gamers not being athletes. It certainly did for me.  
 
Oh, and these guys do sweat. A lot.  
 

 
Gyro, you're going to hate Vista -- Microsoft is making a huge push for cross platform gaming between the PC and Xbox. I tend to agree with your point: games like Call of Duty 3 being console only and titles like Splinter Cell being developed for consoles first and then PC (which led to the PC version being AWFUL) are illustrating a disturbing trend.

 
I remember a friend telling me about the Quake 3 tour bus. It was apparently kept at a steady 50 degrees in there. I doubt anyone complained.

This reminds of another story, when a console port led to great things... I don't enjoy living it, but I don't mind people experimenting when several others are sticking with what we know and love.
 
Gaming is still in its infancy, and experimentation isn't only inevitable, but necessary. Either it will work or it won't. If it does work, it won't be a bad thing. (How could it work if it was?) If it doesn't work, things won't change, so there's really nothing to worry about.
 
There are plenty of parallels in computers. Many games work on across multiple OS's, Final Fantasy XI even allows playing across Windows, PS2, and the 360. Still, most of the one's we enjoy play off the strengths of their systems. I don't see this changing, even with backing/pushing from Microsoft.
 

It's okay to hold competition for gaming.  But, professional gaming is like a sport?  Get the heck out of here..  That's a bunch of B.S.  I'm sorry it's too vain for me.  I've never dreamed of becoming a professional gamer.  LOL.  Maybe if they were giving college scholarship funds as prizes to promote "computer science and engineering majors", or "education", It will still be hard for me to understand their purpose.

Gaming is not and never will be a sport.  A professional slacker is more like it.  This and all the people who are spectators should consider reevaluating their lives, meals on wheels is always looking for volunteers.

good to see this getting more attention.  i am no way a professinal gamer but nayone who games knows that just like any sport, it takes practice and natural talent.  unlike alot of sports it is more mental exertion as when the stakes are high you will be very tense.  
 
   even playing games at home, i am never too relaxed except maybe in some situations like when in RO arty is going off around me.  that is relaxing as their is very little i can do so i am calm but  you are in a building checking for enemies it can be quite tense for me.  that is what i like about gaming.  
 
  to say that you cannot compete in that sort of arena which is all you need to do for it to be a sport, compete, then you are wrong.   as long as people compete at games then it wil be a sport.  it takes mental and physical strength and endurance albeit more weighted in the mental side.  but then again the mental fatigue can be great.  how alert can most people stay over a couple of hours.  probably not as much as alot of gamers.

 
COLLEGE sports are competitive.  Professional sports (with some exceptions) is a bunch of overpaid losers abusing the law & playing lazy on the field/court.
 

 
I know.  I already hated it for the DRM, but the fact that it stands capable of literally killing off PC gaming is equally disturbing.

I can't believe that he's sold out so badly as to claim vista is'HUGE FOR GAMERS". It seems he's happy to put the fatal1ty mark on any old piece of sh1t.
 
Apart from the fact that all game performance sucks badly compared to the same thing under XP, you still can't get decent Vista video drivers even now months after its been available as a product.. Yes months. Before anyone ssays it was only at CompUSA last week, the business edition of vista was available to large corps. since last november.

 
Once they see those zero's on a check with their name on it, they are pretty quick to sell out.... But then again, why would you not lol.... gaming for a living would be amazing.
