This post is mostly to report on canon's exchange policy rather than
seeking technical support, though I would welcome anyone who's
experenced this issue and has a resolution. I got an odd ball error on
my mp760 I couldn't resolve... paper jam rear cover. Well, there was
nothing under the rear cover, and it's not like I couldn't feed in a
piece of paper with the rear cover open through to the front so
technicaly nothing was blocking the paper path.

Canon offered me two choices... service center or advanced replacement
via mail. I picked advanced replacement. Unfortunatly unlike epson
they don't provide a replacement printehead or ink with their printers,
which made me sad as that's $60 bucks every time you encounter a
problem in the warranty period. It's fair.

Lucky for me I have the ip3000... so it's not like i'm without printer.
I am curious if anyone else experenced the same issue, or might have a
simple resolution.

Sounds like a sensor or micro switch which is stuck causing the false error.
As to not getting new ink or printhead with the replacement unit, I don't
see that as a problem. Use the same items in the replacement unit. It's no
different than just getting a replacement part. The same practice applies to
laser printers. When a replacement printer is shipped under warranty, it
comes without a toner cartridge since the existing one is usable with the
new printer.

Well the epson was cool as I would profit from failure, or at least get
free ink for my trouble. I should continue using it in the hopes it
breaks again and get more free ink. I know it's not a big deal, not
something one should expect, but it was a bonus that someone else
reading might consider if picking a printer.

But yes... a micro switch would clearly be the likely cause, the
question is where the heck would the microswitch be.

They do if the printhead gets stuck and you can't take it out.

If you can, you keep your original printhead and ink and return the rest of
the printer.

I thought the expression was "gave up the ghost" as in died... but maybe
some people have ghosts which are goats??

Thanks for the tip... i'll keep this in mind the next time I have to
walk through their scripts. Unfortunatly this time I corrected them.

Support: Remove the power cord
Me: Righto
Support: Open the lid and check your in and read to me what each one
says
Me: I can't they don't move
Support: Oh your carrage is jammed
Me: No. You told me to remove the power, they don't move without
power. They work just fine.

Silly me I thought their script was leading me to some form of manual
paper feed undocumented in the user manual.

I thought about that... when I was young I thought the expression was
"give up the goat" thinking Ishum/Kunaxa or some such, some
Babylonian/Assyrian god that you would sacrafice (give up) a goat to.
So my printer rather than printing decided to sacrafice a goat which
resulted in a report of a jam, which is too be expected when you have a
group of Babylonians living in your printer sacraficing goats.
